Ketchup is one of sugars favourite hiding places with most shop bought bottles contain as much as 25% sugar per bottle.
So that means that a quarter of your ketchup is sugar.
To put that in to perspective, just three tablespoons of ketchup contains the same amount of sugar as you would find in a Krispy Kreme donut.
BUT here is a recipe for a delicious tangy tomato sauce that will satisfy adults and kids alike.
Plus you can make even spicier by adding chilli's!
INGREDIENTS
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1/2 onion
2 tbsp tomato puree
50ml passata
1/2 red apple
pinch of sea salt
1 garlic clove
1small chopped red chill (optional)
1/2tsp cayenne pepper
1/2tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 cloves
3 tbsp white wine vinegar
METHOD
Heat the oil in a pan adding the onion, apple and chilli.
Gently sweat for a good 10 minutes.
Add the crushed garlic and salt and cook for a further 5 minutes.
Add the remaining ingredients and cook for 15 minutes.
Blitz with a hand held whizzer/ pour in to a blender and whizz.
Strain through a sieve and decant in to air tight containers, preferable glass bottles and store in the fridge.
